Getting Clean

I am back to making enormous salads every day. I started doing that about a year and a half ago to try to get my health back, and now I’m resuming that mission. My health has improved a lot since then, but I still have congestion in my chest from pneumonia from that period, and so my singing voice is has been affected. I’ve also been smoking for the past 11 months, and for the past three years on and off, and so I’ve finally quit and I won’t smoke again until my singing is as clear as it was two years ago when I was on tour in Europe and I had the greatest facility with pitches high and low, and could also produce strong overtones.

I injured my arm last week and came down with what they call “tennis elbow”. I’ve played tennis once in my life, and I was probably nine years old (though I really would like to try it again), but this was from drumming and working out on what I think is an injured shoulder. So, I’m letting myself heal, but also taking this opportunity to turn my life around completely. I noticed a trend that I’m most motivated to make the big changes when something dramatic happens to my well-being, which makes sense. Otherwise it’s easy to just keep going with the bad habits when it doesn’t really affect you in any acute way. Anyway I haven’t been able to play guitar or drums for the past week, so I’ve been spending my time at the studio singing and it’s just made it clear to me that I need to get my voice in shape to sing these new songs with confidence and ease.

I moved to Nashville a year ago this week, which is kind of nuts to me, but also feels like several lifetimes ago that I arrived here. It’s also nuts that I prepared a meal for myself at home for the first time just last week, mainly because it was hard to use the kitchen at home with so many people crowding it. Now that they are leaving, things just keep getting better and better. I have a home office, a studio space, and a bedroom with nothing in it but a bed and my clothes. So nice.

So yeah, salad. Ingredients today:

  • baby spinach
  • artichoke hearts
  • pepitas
  • sumac
  • fresh ground black pepper
  • sardines
  • red cabbage
  • an onion
  • raw garlic
  • two “kumatoes”
  • a cucumber
  • a carrot
  • all-purpose seasoning
  • sauerkraut
  • lime juice
  • lemon juice
  • apple cider vinegar
  • chick peas
  • and probably a few other things
